Fern Cottage House 

Fern Cottage: 

Fern Cottage was built in 1866 for the cattle ranching Russ family. The cottage, a picturesque farm house, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located three miles west of Ferndale on 2121 Centerville Road. Public tours of the historic home are available.

Ferndale Museum Mural Front  

 Ferndale Museum: 

This museum features quaint antiques like Victorian room settings, a working seismograph, and farming and dairy equipment. The Ferndale Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. From June to September, it is also open on Tuesday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please call in advance to schedule a group tour conducted by a local volunteer. The museum can be reached at (707) 786-4466.


Kinetic Sculptures 

Ferndale Kinetic Sculpture Race Museum: 

The Kinetic Sculpture race originated in Ferndale the year 1969. Later, it spread to the rest of the world. Memorabilia from the past of the races is showcased. It is open 10 am to 5 pm daily and is located in the Ferndale Art and Cultural Center on Main Street.

Ferndale Library

This Carnegie Library was built in 1910. It is open from 12 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Thursday, and Saturday and from 12 am to 4:30 pm on Friday. Evening hours are on Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The library can be reached at (707) 786-9559.

Ferndale Repertoire Theatre 

Ferndale Repertory Theatre: 

Year round live theatre is performed in these halls. Classic plays and newly crafted plays are executed to the delight of the community. Performances take place at 8:00 pm on either Friday or Saturday nearly every week. On Saturday and Sunday, matinees are at 2:00 pm. The Theatre can be reached at (707) 786-LIVE; (707) 786-5483.

Humboldt County Fair horse racing 

Humboldt County Fairgrounds

The fairground is a delightful meadow, a fun place to walk and explore when no events are scheduled. The fairgrounds are often busy with Scout-o-ramas, High School Rodeos, and antique shows. However, the most exciting event is the Humboldt County Fair and Horse Race that takes place every August. This tradition is now 101 years old. Call (707) 786-9511 for fairgrounds information.

Replica of Cape Mendocino Lighthouse



The replica of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse was dedicated in 1948. It is home to the original Fresnel lens which was ground in France in 1868. This lens amplifies 16 beams of light which contain 135,000 candle power. The replica of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse is located on the fairgrounds. It is lit each evening of the Humboldt County Fair. Call (707) 786-9511 for more information.

Cemetery Vista

Ferndale Cemetery: 

The cemetery contains historic markers that date back to the last century. It has become an unexpectedly popular attraction due its history as a pioneer cemetery. It is beautifully placed with views of the ocean on the west and the town and Eel River Valley to the east. 




Bocce is a sport closely related to bowls. Its roots were in the Roman Empire and developed to its present form in Italy. Three new courts, located centrally at Firemen’s Park, are built to refulation standards by the Ferndale Bocce Club. One of the courts is also wheelchair accessible. Courts are open to the public and for personal use. Bocce balls can be rented from J & W Liquors. The regular schedule, located on the Bocce website, usually includes Sunday afternoon bocce open at 1:00 pm. Bocce opens on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm. A Bocce potluck takes place on the first Sunday of every month.

Russ Park Bird Watching: 


Russ Park is a 110 acre plot of closed canopy forest which has become a bird sanctuary with more than three miles of hiking trails. Russ Par was donated to Ferndale by Zipporah Patrick Russ in 1920. Interestingly and despite it being between the redwoods, Russ Park is a Sitka Spruce Forest.

 Humboldt Botanical Garden: 

The Garden is a 44.5 acre site that includes a complete native plant garden, greenhouse, and natural riparian area. Documented native and exotic plants provide an educational, aesthetically pleasing and tranquil experience for visitors. Planned gardens include the temperate woodland garden and ornamental terrace garden. It is open to the public for special events and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Avenue of the Giants

This world famous scenic drive is the most awe inspiring display of giant redwood trees in California. The Avenue is surrounded by the Humbold Redwoods State Park, which contains the largest remaining virgin redwoods in the world. It is a 31 mile portion of the old High 101, accessible by most vehicles.
